AEW Rankings (July 7, 2021): Kingston & Penta become a deserving #1

AEW released their latest rankings (July 7, 2021). Let’s check out the movers and shakers.

Men:

Jungle Boy’s 50th career win pushed him over the inactive Darby Allin from #4 to #3. There is a lesson in there for Hangman Page. If he truly wants a shot at the AEW World Championship, then he can’t rest on his laurels. All it would take to lose the #1 ranking is Orange Cassidy picking up a win on a week when Hangman is idle.

In top 5 action for Dynamite, #5 Matt Sydal will wrestle Andrade in El Idolo’s AEW in-ring debut. I think it is safe to predict that we will have a new name in the top 5 next week after Andrade beats Sydal.

Women:

No changes for the women.

Whoa! There is a new #1 in town, and it came out of nowhere. Eddie Kingston & Pentagon popped up to the top spot after defeating the Young Bucks in a title eliminator. Their prize for winning is a tag title shot tonight on Dynamite, and it happens to be a street fight. Everybody else moved down one spot, while Santana & Ortiz got the shaft from #5.

AEW bucked the trend of separating #1 ranked and #1 contender. In cases where someone wins #1 contender status and is not ranked, AEW has usually kept the rankings more a reflection of overall résumé. On the surface, Kingston & Pentagon taking the top spot in the rankings seems cheap, however, they actually have a solid case to claim that honor. The tag division has been pretty weak in 2021. No other team in the top 5 has distinguished themselves in any way this year. King & Penta are undefeated with quality wins over TH2, Chaos Project, and, most importantly, the Bucks. Might as well give #1 to Kingston & Pentagon.

Do you agree with AEW’s rankings this week? If not, what would you change?
