Lucha Libre Roundup: AAA mask vs. hair home invasion angle, CMLL Torneo Increíble de Parejas, more!

Welcome to the lucha libre roundup with news from the masked sport. AAA’s mask versus hair feud between Psycho Clown and Rey Escorpion reached home invasion levels, CMLL crowned the winner of the Torneo Increíble de Parejas, Sexy Dulce (fka Sexy Star) suffered a health scare in Guatemala, and Andrade and Rush pulled out of Federación Wrestling’s debut show.

AAA is gearing up for Triplemania XXIX on August 14. There top tier bouts have already been announced:

  • Mask vs. Hair: Psycho Clown vs. Rey Escorpion
  • AAA Megacampeonato: Kenny Omega (c) vs. Andrade
  • Title vs. Title: Faby Apache (AAA Reina de Reinas) vs. Deonna Purrazzo (Impact Knockouts)

The mask versus hair feud between Psycho Clown and Rey Escorpion has gotten very personal lately. The Triplemania press conference in May had a scuffle between the two.

The bad blood erupted when Rey Escorpion invaded Psycho Clown’s home for a special delivery beatdown. Escorpion unloaded a barrage of punches and slammed Psycho’s head on a table. That’s bad enough, but it was done in front of little children. Oh my!

Psycho got payback with a sneak attack mugging inside a restaurant. Psycho literally turned the tables on Escorpion.

The next round of fisticuffs took place in a park. As Psycho was exercising, Escorpion ran up to dish out more violence. Psycho’s sister, Goya Kong, was also victim to a stomping.

The wild build for this feud is awesome. When the mask versus hair was first announced, I was lukewarm about the fight. After all these assaults, I’m chomping at the bit to see this main event. Well played, AAA.

There might be even more savagery soon. AAA has the second Triplemania press conference scheduled Monday, June 28 at 12 pm ET. More matches might be revealed, and hopefully the card for Verano de Escándalo gets announced. The only match booked so far for the July 3 show is Deonna Purrazzo versus Lady Shani.

CMLL held a Torneo Increíble de Parejas over the past three weeks. The concept was one tecnico teaming with one rudo in an unlikely alliance.

Volador Jr. & Templario won the first stage (highlights).

CMLL

Caristico & Virus took the second stage (highlights).

CMLL

The two duos dueled in the tournament final on Friday night (June 25, 2021). Virus locked Volador in a modified single-leg crab, and Caristico trapped Templario in a hurricanrana pin to win the first fall. The score was tied after the second fall when Volador connected on a backstabber to Virus and Templario put Caristico down on a fireman’s carry cutter. The third and deciding fall went the way of Volador and Templario. The partners secured a double pin when Templario crushed Caristico on a sitdown powerbomb backbreaker and Volador finished Virus with an inverted Gory Special slam. Volador became a three-time winner of the Torneo Increíble de Parejas.

Enjoy the highlight reel. The action really picks up for the third fall.

Rough news to report about Sexy Dulce (fka Sexy Star), courtesy of Super Luchas. She traveled to Guatemala for a lucha libre show and ended up in the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. Sexy wasn’t feeling well prior to her flight, but she traveled anyway. Her abdominal pain worsened, and she was taken to the hospital. Thankfully, Sexy is recuperating after successful surgery.

In news regarding other Lucha Underground stars, Matt Cross (aka Son of Havoc) recently wrestled in Mexico and had a great time.

Karlee Perez (aka Catrina) is moving on up in the movie industry. She scored a partnership deal with Atmosphere Entertainment to develop a series called Miami River Cops. The press release describes the show as, “Set in 1980’s Miami, the story follows Zapata, a young Latin street cop facing off against drug dealers, racist commanders, and his own corrupt motivations.”

Do you remember the announcement of Andrade and Rush booked to wrestle for a new lucha libre promotion called Federación Wrestling? Well, that endeavor didn’t turn out so hot.

Federación Wrestling’s debut show was scheduled for June 19. Andrade and Rush both pulled out earlier in the week, then the promotion cancelled the event. Federación Wrestling chalked it up to logistics, but the logical theory points to money issues. For example, CMLL was only allowed to sell limited tickets with a 500 person capacity due to COVID restrictions in Mexico City, so it leads to reason that a financial success was unlikely for the Federación Wrestling show, especially considering expenses for the superstar luchadores on the card and several American wrestlers being flown in. Time will tell if Federación Wrestling regroups to try again when full capacity is allowed in Mexico City.
