Rumor Look Back: Aug. 14 – 20, 2020

Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally stated. Let’s jump right to it.

August 14, 2020

  • WrestleVotes notes that there’s strong enthusiasm at the Performance Center that all episodes of WWE television will be live from the Amway Center in Orlando.
  • The shows really did improve when they moved to Amway.
  • PW Insider says current plans call for AJ Styles to defend the Intercontinental championship against Jeff Hardy at SummerSlam.
  • That match didn’t happen at SummerSlam. Jeff won it two days before on SmackDown instead. (0/1)
  • For whatever it’s worth, Big E told talkSPORT that WWE told him where they plan for his singles run to go but he won’t believe it until he sees it.
  • I wonder what they told him. He’s in a good spot on SmackDown right now and doing fantastic work.
  • Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that AEW still has big plans for Jungle Boy but is waiting for the return of fans at live shows.
  • That makes sense. Some of the yet established guys, like Jungle Boy, would benefit from ascending in front of a large live crowd.
  • Vitor Belfort told Chris Van Vliet he could be coming back to pro wrestling and AEW in the future.
  • Nothing about that yet.

August 15, 2020

  • Per WrestleVotes, WWE will be using 2500 square feet of LED boards to create an interactive experience with live fans at the Amway Center for future television.
  • Their set up is quite impressive.
  • They also note applications will be taken to appear on screen starting next week.
  • Started the week of the debut. (1/1)
  • According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, previous plans for the start of the AJ Styles-Jeff Hardy program were torn up by Vince McMahon multiple times before going ahead this week.
  • At least there was no urine involved.
  • Adam Pearce and Dewey Foley are the “key creative forces” behind 205 Live, per the WON.
  • I have not watched 205 in a very long time.
  • The Observer says the goal for Ring of Honor is to “try and fill the void that hardcore fans have asked for.”
  • It may be too late for them, especially in this current landscape where AEW, Impact, and NJPW are all working together. ROH is on the outside looking in.

August 17, 2020

  • Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that nearly everyone in WWE has reached out to AEW at one point or another with interest in the company of some sort. He also said Roman Reigns is one of the people who hasn’t.
  • Roman knows his spot in the company. In general, it makes sense for people to at least see what’s going out there, even if they’re probably going to stick with WWE. And as long as the rumor is out there, wrestlers negotiating with WWE have more leverage, which is good for them.
  • The early speculation is SummerSlam will feature multiple matches booked to leave a rematch open that will take place a week later at Payback.
  • There were a couple matches that payed off the week prior. (1/1)
  • Daniel Cormier still has commentary options in pro wrestling now that he’s retired from MMA, per the Observer.
  • There aren’t a lot of promotions during the pandemic for him to commentate, so we’ll sit on this a bit longer.
  • There’s some talk of WWE bringing back “Saturday Night’s Main Event” in some form, as PW Insider notes the company has put in trademark applications for it.
  • That hasn’t returned. (0/1)
  • WWE Network News notes that episodes of Superstars from 1993 will be added to the WWE Network today.
  • These rumors are always a pain because I can check to see if it’s loaded (and there are Superstars from 93) but no idea when it was loaded.

August 18, 2020

  • Braun Strowman posted in an Instagram Story that he wasn’t one of the WWE Superstars who contacted AEW recently, and called it “fake news” from “Dork Marksler.”
  • Dork Marksler. So clever.
  • Prior to Triple H’s comments about allegations against him, Fightful Select said there was backstage heat on Velveteen Dream “for behavioral issues and what is perceived as preferential treatment in multiple situations that would have had most anyone else fired.”
  • Talk about a fall from grace.
  • John Alba & Jeff Allen of Spectrum News 13 report WWE is paying Amway Center “about $450,000” to put on television there for the next two months.
  • I don’t know if that’s a lot or not, but WWE needed some place and at the time, Amway didn’t need the space.
  • WWE is still interested in signing just-retired UFC legend Daniel Cormier, per Dave Meltzer on the Sunday Night’s Main Event podcast. Fox wants him on SmackDown commentary.
  • DC has not joined the Fox booth. (0/1)
  • “Minutes” of promo material were cut from the Randy Orton/Ric Flair segment on the Aug. 9 Raw, per Fightful.
  • That was a superb Flair promo. That guy still has it when it comes to the mic.

August 19, 2020

  • Dave Meltzer said Payback being a week after SummerSlam is just an experiment WWE is running with to see how it works out.
  • They never did it again, and overall, I’m glad they didn’t. But it actually worked rather well. SummerSlam was shorter and Payback served to house the matches they didn’t put on SummerSlam and run some fallout angles.
  • There may also be a big angle at SummerSlam that demands an immediate follow up.
  • This would be the Roman Reigns return, I’m sure. (1/1)
  • For whatever it’s worth, Cody Rhodes told a fan that AEW had no contact with Goldberg and recent word they wanted to bring him in “isn’t real.”
  • I dunno… AEW loves bringing in old wrestlers associated with WCW.
  • Tom Colohue noted on Twitter that “very few people within WWE support the rumor that practically everybody has contacted AEW at some point.”
  • I’m going to split the difference from this rumor and the other one. (1/2)
  • Tony Schiavone told Ron Funches he was “kind of offered a job with WWE” at the same time AEW did.
  • It’s great having Tony back in wrestling. I was tongue in cheek on AEW bringing back old WCW wrestlers, but bringing back Schiavone has connect with my nostalgia but at the same time, he’s still great.

August 20, 2020

  • Renee Young’s WWE exit will be shortly after SummerSlam, according to Outkick.
  • This came on rather quickly but was probably brewing for awhile.
  • According to an email sent to fans, WWE will be testing Thunderdome on Thursday. Participants will get a free match from Amway Center and be the first to see & use the new set-up.
  • Using the fan screens took some time to get the kinks out, but it’s been a success overall.
  • EC3 is starting with Ring of Honor at the television tapings taking place this week in Maryland, per PW Insider.
  • He debut on TV in October but that could have been taped months earlier. Normally we’d lean on taping spoilers, but they’re not prominent with no one in the crowd. Since EC3 did end up debuting with them and that hadn’t been officially announced, I’ll give this one the nod. (1/1)
  • Riddick Moss was in line for a big push before the coronavirus lockdown, Fightful Select reported. Then-Raw Executive Director Paul Heyman made the decision to bench him because he cares for a family member with a pre-existing condition. Heyman didn’t want Moss to catch heat for deciding to sit out on his own.
  • If true, that’s good of Heyman to try to protect him. Moss hasn’t been around much at all, but he did participate in Raw Underground.
  • WWE Network removed six older documentaries from the service. Insider speculates it may be because all feature old Bret Hart footage. Hart owns all of his Stampede Wrestling matches, and he & WWE have never come to terms on a licensing arrangement.
  • Bret Hart isn’t gonna give WWE something just to be nice. I wouldn’t expect him (or anyone) to.

This week: 5/9 – 56%

Overall: 3,650/6,495 – 56.2%

Have a good week, everyone. Stay safe out there.
