Riddle vs. Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Keith Lee
United States championship match
Bobby Lashley’s United States title reign has been rough.
While he’s booked dominantly when he has a match, his United States title run has been very forgettable.
One issue is he often feels hidden within his stable. The Hurt Business in general is a very entertaining group. It’s done great things for Cedric Alexander, who is really great in his current persona. It’s giving Shelton Benjamin, who holds the Raw tag titles alongside Alexander, deserved television time. But Lashley seems too big for it.
It’s not that Lashley should be in the main event of WrestleMania. But he’s a physical specimen, can go in the ring, and has more personality than his first run in WWE. Just standing around looking sharp as the CEO of the Hurt Business is not enough for the man.
Another very significant reason this US title run has been lackluster is the absence of a strong feud. Or even a good feud. Lashley won the gold from Apollo Crews in September. Since then he defended it successfully against Apollo in a rematch. The next defense was the real Greatest Wrestling Match Ever against SLAPJACK. He also had a title defense against Titus O’Neil that, if you’re like me, you don’t remember at all.
It’s been a little bit more competitive recently as he’s been feuding with Riddle. But he defeated him once and lost the other by DQ because he was beating on him so bad. It was nothing that made us believe that Riddle can actually beat Bobby.
Keith Lee recently tossed his hat into the ring. He defeated Riddle in a very entertaining match that looked to serve as a #1 contenders match. But after the bout, the Destroy demolished both men, setting up this triple threat.
All of that would be a shame because Lee vs. Lashley could be a great program. Two big, athletic powerhouses going full hoss in the ring. That would actually be a strong United States title feud. And it could still happens. Rumors are just that. But if Lashley’s reign continues the course it’s been on, I wouldn’t get my hopes up.
If that doesn’t happen and this match puts both Lee and Riddle in Lashley’s rearview, creative needs to find a suitable challenge for the CEO. Because this reign has been rough.
Bobby Lashley will defend his United States championship against Riddle and (maybe) Keith Lee tomorrow at Elimination Chamber, airing at 7 PM ET on the WWE Network. And keep it here at CagesideSeats.com for all your Elimination Chamber coverage.
