Among other things, AEW promised to install some fancy analytics to supplement their ranking system. It hasn’t happened yet, but here are some they could use.

When All Elite Wrestling (AEW) launched in January 2019, one of the things the young promotion promised to deliver as part of their sports-like presentation was the inclusion of analytics to buttress their rankings system and emphasis on win-loss records. Thus far, the company hasn’t followed through on this.

The lack of any detailed statistics hasn’t anchored down the booking in any way — AEW is still one of the more logical and consistent wrestling promotions out there — and hasn’t siphoned any quality away from the matches, but installing those sort of metrics as an additional tool for the writers and the wrestlers to supplement whatever stories they’re telling would give the fans who are into that aspect of sports (or pseudo-sports, in this case) more of an incentive to remain invested.

As fans have seen in promotions like New Japan Pro Wrestling and Major League Wrestling, integrating additional data into your product can better explain a wrestlers’ kayfabe strategy and fighting style that still ties into the larger narrative. Plus, the possibility of seeing Jim Ross’ head pop like a balloon at the very mention of such stats is too tantalizing to pass up.

But which sort of stats should they add to their product? Well, that’s up to them to figure out — assuming they want to figure it out — but some of these could possibly work.
