The women’s tag team division will see an influx of pairs with the announcement of the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Tag team wrestling is not given the most space in the WWE, but that situation is even worse when it comes to the women’s tag team division. A step in the right direction was announced during NXT New Year’s Evil on Wednesday, as the women will now be involved in their own iteration of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

NXT General Manager, William Regal announced that the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Classic is “coming soon.” At the time, no teams were announced nor was an official start date revealed. The men’s classic will begin on next week’s edition of NXT with the first round.

When the WWE women’s tag team titles were established, the original goal was to have the belts float from brand to brand, with the belts appearing on SmackDown, Raw and NXT. Unfortunately, that has happened few and far in-between. Since their creation, the belts have appeared twice, once with the Kabuki Warriors defended and a second time with the Golden Role Models defending. Recently the belts have been wrapped up in storylines involving the WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown titles, devaluing their overall purpose.

The question that comes up is who will be paired together to make the brackets. While there are teams like Kayden Carter and Kacy Catanzaro ready to go, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the field is fleshed out. Perhaps there will be some surprise entrants like Alex Shelley joining Kushida to reform the Time Splitters. There is also an opportunity to include women like the Riott Squad from the main roster.

The announcement of the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is an important move. Just like the Mae Young Classic, this is an opportunity to showcase their talent and give new faces time in front of large swaths of fans. No dates or teams have been announced but there should be excitement around what is coming for the women’s tag team division.
